HOLY TURKESTAN

Turkestan, Kazakhstan

Discover Turkistan, a 1600-year-old city in the South Kazakhstan region near the Syrdarya river. Turkestan was an ancient centre of the caravan trade, it was known as Shavgar and later as Yasī. In the 11th century AD, the great Sufi sheikh Khoja Ahmed Yasawi lived and preached in this locality, At the end of the 14th century, Emir Timur ordered the creation of a large mausoleum, mosque, and madrassah on the site of his grave. Later, the capital of the Kazakh Khanate was moved to the city of Turkestan. During the capital city, a large number of Kazakh khans, batyrs, generals, and well-known statesmen of the Kazakh Khanate were buried there. Now this place has become a tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
